DANIEL L. GOODWIN COLLEGE OF BUSINESS
Professionals in the finance industry typically work to define strategies that manage risk and return for clients.
To achieve these objectives, these professionals have extensive training in measuring and forecasting risk and return, constructing portfolios, and managing risk. These professionals are also typically working toward professional certifications such as the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Financial Risk Manager (FRM), or Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA).
The Finance program at Benedictine provides the students with proper knowledge in each specific area. We have Investment finance concentration and Corporate finance concentration. Investment finance focuses on financial markets and delivers core knowledge of financial derivatives, modeling, and analysis while Corporate finance focuses on M&A, funding and corporate valuation. Both concentrations are very popular in Chicago area, one of the biggest financial markets in the world.
Throughout their undergraduate careers, students work in small teams to solve real-world problems for local companies. Past projects have included conducting research for the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago and model development for Hoopis Group LLC.
Our students have participated in The Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) Institute Research Challenge, an annual competition that provides students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis and professional ethics. Recently, our undergraduate team placed second in the Chicago Challenge against experienced master’s level teams from the University of Chicago, DePaul University, and Loyola University.
As members of our Investment Club, students perform stock selection, portfolio management and risk management while reporting to a board of directors, comprised of working executives and leaders in the investment field. Since its inception more than 15 years ago, the fund has grown to a current market value of nearly $285,000.
Prior to graduation, an alumnus visited the Investment Club to discuss an internship opportunity with JPMorgan Chase & Co. Upon successful completion of the internship, I was offered full-time employment at the company, which is an opportunity only made possible through the success of other alumni. My time on the soccer team helped me learn to compete at the collegiate level, which was an invaluable lesson that prepared me for my career. In contrast to high school, both your coaches and your teammates are adults, which is rather similar to the workplace. Athletics taught me when to lead, when to follow and how to play to my strengths. These lessons are ones I use each and every day when interacting with my team at work.
